Hector Goudreau, Alberta’s employment minister says the province could find itself short 110,000 workers over the next decade unless government and industry start thinking of new ways to attract and retain workers. The province is currently between 30,000 to 40,000 workers short in all fields of employment.

He made the comments prior to announcing a new provincial immigration initiative that would allow Albertans to fast-track family members with a post-secondary education and work experience to come here.

The polls, conducted in Canada and the United States on behalf of California-based recruitment firm Robert Half International, showed that most executives believe that professional networking sites will prove useful over the next three years for job seekers…(and there’s more)”

“Of 100 senior Canadian executives interviewed, 67 percent said they thought professional networking sites — such as LinkedIn — were useful for recruiting new employees, and 25 percent said they thought social networking sites like Facebook would be useful.”

With unemployment at all-time historic lows and different demands and expectations from Gen Y, recruiting entry-level employees is tougher than ever before.

In fact, Dallas-based solution provider CompuCom changed its employee communications in response to feedback from its younger workforce.

The Alberta Government announced a raise in the minimum raise from $8.00 to $8.40 per hour effective April 1, 2008.

The David Thompson Health Region, which provides health care services including hospitals in the local area, has been forced to cut back on services due to a lack of workers. In a major news release and news conference on April 9, 2008 CEO John Vogelzang announced the closing of one of eight operating theatres. It was also announced that the region has more than 300 openings for jobs ranging from cooks and support staff to lab technicians and registered nurses.
