Hello my name is Dean Owen and my company is albertaJOBcast. We can help you get your employee recruitment message in front of the millions of people who take part in social networks such as Facebook and YouTube. We help you engage the 18-35 year old job seekers who populate these communities by publishing and promoting online employer profiles and job ads as entertaining and information-rich multimedia presentations. We call them JOBcasts.
Hector Goudreau, Alberta’s employment minister says the province could find itself short 110,000 workers over the next decade unless government and industry start thinking of new ways to attract and retain workers. The province is currently between 30,000 to 40,000 workers short in all fields of employment.
He made the comments prior to announcing a new provincial immigration initiative that would allow Albertans to fast-track family members with a post-secondary education and work experience to come here.
“Job seekers should tap into online networking sites to help hunt down potential employers, new surveys suggest. The polls, conducted in Canada and the United States on behalf of California-based recruitment firm Robert Half International, showed that most executives believe that professional networking sites will prove useful over the next three years for job seekers…(and there’s more)”
“Of 100 senior Canadian executives interviewed, 67 percent said they thought professional networking sites — such as LinkedIn — were useful for recruiting new employees, and 25 percent said they thought social networking sites like Facebook would be useful.”
With unemployment at all-time historic lows and different demands and expectations from Gen Y, recruiting entry-level employees is tougher than ever before.
…efforts should include touting “soft benefits” such as corporate culture, philanthropy efforts, environmental leadership and workplace perks like generous benefits, financial support for further education, health and fitness facilities.
These are the things you can talk about in a JOBcast that don’t come through in a traditional job ad.
While face-to-face communication is important for workers of any age, electronic communications become an essential supplement for Generation Y workers.
In fact, Dallas-based solution provider CompuCom changed its employee communications in response to feedback from its younger workforce.
“We provided a video update of our business and we started doing blogs,” said Jim Dixon, CEO of CompuCom.
Based on these numbers from StatsCan, you might want to consider publishing JOBcasts in a language other than English.

The David Thompson Health Region, which provides health care services including hospitals in the local area, has been forced to cut back on services due to a lack of workers. In a major news release and news conference on April 9, 2008 CEO John Vogelzang announced the closing of one of eight operating theatres. It was also announced that the region has more than 300 openings for jobs ranging from cooks and support staff to lab technicians and registered nurses.
